A passenger plane crashed into a gated residential community in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, on Friday, August 9, 2024, resulting in the deaths of all 61 people on board. The aircraft, an ATR 72-500 operated by Voepass, was en route from Cascavel in Parana State to Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo when it went down in the city of Vinhedo.
The crash left a smoldering wreck, but there were no reported casualties among residents in the area. The airline confirmed that the plane was carrying 57 passengers and 4 crew members. Voepass expressed deep regret over the tragedy and stated that they are providing support to the victims’ families while cooperating with authorities to investigate the cause of the crash.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva requested a moment of silence at an event in southern Brazil to honor the victims. The black box of the aircraft was recovered intact, and initial data showed the plane was descending rapidly before impact. The Brazilian air force and Federal Police have launched investigations into the incident. ATR, the manufacturer of the aircraft, is also supporting the investigation. The Capela neighborhood, where the crash occurred, is a district in Vinhedo, a city with 77,000 residents.
